Reference to a journey about to be made by "the boys" (i.e., Richard Penrose Arnold and Trevenen William Arnold). Reference also to the Commune (established 18 March 1871). The year of the letter must be 1871 as this was the only year following the Commune when Trevenen William Arnold would still have been alive]. 1 l.

[Note: Although Vincent Quinn counted a total of 307 letters from Matthew Arnold to Mrs. Thomas Arnold in the Whitridge Collection he included in his total at least one 'fragment' (for the letter listed as 'number 40' I have catalogued a 'fragment' as the second part of a single leaf letter) and, apparently, a letter to Frances Arnold. Vincent Quinn also catalogued 315 letters and 'fragments' altogether].
