Group II

Class B - Markbooks for the 1880s-1890s

II B consists of 7 notebooks which BJ used to make reports upon essays presented to him by Balliol undergraduates. The format of each book is identical: either Matthew or Martha Knight filled out the book with names of undergraduates and the dates on which essays would be handed in, and then BJ would enter comments and/or marks into the relevant spaces. Because of the number of names mentioned here, they have not been listed or indexed. Instead, the dates when the books were in use are given; the Balliol College Register 1833-1933 will show which undergraduates are likely to appear. The year is often not given. In such circumstances, where it can be calculated, a date is given in in italics in square brackets. If it cannot be calculated, the matriculation dates of the undergraduates named are given instead. images online
