Jowett Papers - Group III Class N
Group III Class N - Letters to Florence Nightingale
These letters were found among the papers of Florence Nightingale (FN in this section) after her death in 1910. They then went to Henry Bonham Carter, who made them available to Sir Edward Cook for the first biography of FN, which was published in 1913. Cook returned them to Bonham Carter, and then on the prompting of E. Hilliard and J.L. Strachan-Davidson (by them Master of Balliol), persuaded him to give them to Balliol (Volume IX of the present series and IV A2 have some of the correspondence in which the transfer was agreed). A few had been used by Abbott and Campbell for their life of BJ, but these were returned to FN. At some stage after their arrival in Balliol, the letters were bound into eight volumes, each one measuring 190 by 150mm, with a ninth supplementary volume (measuring 240 by 180 mm) containing material connected with their transfer. The catalogue indicates where one volume stops and another begins.
Balliol did not receive every letter from BJ found among FN's papers. A few, which were deemed to be too personal, were retained by the family, and were eventually deposited in the British Museum. When E.V. Quinn and J.M. Prest published a selection of the correspondence in Dear Miss Nightingale (Oxford 1987; henceforth QP), they used some of these, giving their reference numbers. Any user of these letters, therefore, has to remember that the collection is incomplete. Transcripts of these letters are in Balliol Library.
Because this is the only set of BJ's letters from which so full a selection has been published, their listing differs in certain respects from other letters in this catalogue. If a letter was published in QP, no summary is provided, but the number which was assigned it there is given with the prefix QP; the prefix QP* indicates that only part of the letter was published. Even if a letter is not summarised, the date, address, length and hand used are given, and all people mentioned in it are indexed. Many letters have had dates written on in pencil, some in FN's hand, others apparently in Cook's. These are given in square brackets. Furthermore, FN was inlcined to put lines in the margin alongside passages which she considered especially interesting.
There are occasions where the letters have clearly been bound in the wrong order. In such cases, the letters have been listed in the sequence in which they appear.
All letters are from BJ to Florence Nightingale, and are in ink unless otherwise indicated.

[701] 33 envelopes, each of which has a year inscribed on it ( they form a continuous series from 1861 to 1893), and the letters J4, followed by some numbers. It seems very probable that these were the envelopes in which BJ's letters to FB were sent to Balliol in 1913, and in which they were kept until they were bound in their present state. The writing on the envelopes is unknown; it cannot therefore be known whether FN put the letters into these envelopes or Sir Edward Cook; the latter seems more likely.
