Jowett Papers - Group II Class M

Group II

Class M - Picture albums owned by Benjamin Jowett

Two albums, which seem to have been owned by BJ. As with II L and II N, these items were not found with the 'Additional Jowett Papers', and have not been catalogued before. However, they too seem never to have left Balliol, and are therefore placed with this group.

M1

Large photograph album (320 by 410mm), red leather cover with complex gold patterns on edge and spine. On the inside cover is a bookplate showing that it was among BJ's books when he died. 22 leaves*.

It consists of photographs of Japan (perhaps it was given to BJ by a Japanese undergraduate at Balliol).

M2

Album (195 by 165mm), which has lost its cover. It has not been paginated (originally in an envelope inscribed by EVQ B Jowett).

It is filled with reproductions of old masters, almost all on religious subjects. The range of styles and periods is very wide. There is no indication of ownership, but EVQ suggested that it was owned by BJ.

- Robin Darwall-Smith, 1993
