Portraits catalogue

A catalogue of the College's portrait collection as it was in 1989 was published in 1990: John Jones, The Portraits of Balliol College. A Catalogue. It then comprised 164 catalogued items in various media: photographs were excluded. These are all given below with their catalogue numbers, together with a further 20 items which have been catalogued since 1989.

Please note that the images on this page are the only versions currently available in a digital format. They are taken from photographic prints, mostly black and white, taken some time ago as part of a photographic survey of College portraits. We do not have better quality prints or digital images, and we do not have colour images of the portraits except the few in colour on this website. The cost of producing photographic prints from file negatives, where this is possible, will be passed on to the enquirer.

For reasons of access and, in some cases, copyright, it is not currently feasible for enquirers to photograph the portraits themselves or to have professional photographers do the work for them. Many are large, and many hang very high on the wall in heavily used areas of the College. We hope eventually to have better digital images made, but we regret that we cannot currently fulfil such requests.

Where an image appears in an entry below, Balliol College has copyright in the painting and is therefore able to provide copies upon request or consider applications for permission to reproduce the image. Where no image appears with a portrait description, copyright lies elsewhere and the College is not able to provide copies or give permission for reproductions.
