Notes:

Abbreviations

Throughout the catalogue, Arthur Lionel Smith is abbreviated to "AS," in order to avoid confusion with "ALS," an autograph signed letter.

Photographs in the collection

There are a few miscellaneous photographs scattered throughout both the Papers and Letters. These have been added to the archive's photographic database as a group, with the prefix "ALS02" before the number for each individual photograph. The dBase code "ALS01" was assigned to photographs in the album belonging to AS from the 1870s which is also part of the archive but not catalogued in detail.
